Burke PLLC also has been seeking accountability from those private corporations whose employees participated in torturing prisoners at Abu Ghraib and other prisons in Iraq. Burke filed the first action in June 2004, only a few months after the scandal came to light, and the latest in May 2008. To date, although the military has court-martialed and convicted several service members who executed acts of torture, the Department of Justice has failed to take any action against the private corporations involved in the same misconduct.
The instances of torture in Abu Ghraib inspired many to speak out about the reports. Photographer Chris Bartlett and artist Daniel Heyman traveled to Jordan and Turkey with Burke PLLC lawyers to meet former detainees from Abu Ghraib. Those visits inspired Chris to start The Detainee Project, as well as a series of art by Daniel titled Portraits of Iraqis. Additionally, author Nick Flynn, in his 2010 memoir, The Ticking is the Bomb, discussed the impact of his trips to interview detainees.
